Declining Trust In Our Government Essay Declining Trust in Our GovernmentIs the American peoples trust in our government declining? According tomost people, it definitely is. Recent polls make this argument very valid. In1995, the Princeton Survey Research Associates conducted a telephone interviewof 1514 random sample adults. In this interview, people were asked how much ofthe time they trusted in the federal government to do the right thing. Twenty-one percent said most of the time and seventy-one percent said only some of thetime. When asked the same question of their state governments, the resultswere only slightly better. Thirty percent said most of the time and sixty-twopercent said only some of the time (Why Dont). This indicates that amajority of the American people believe that the American government is notdoing the right thing in a lot of the actions it takes. Of course, nobodyexpects the government to operate perfectly with no mistakes, because this isnot a perfect world. These numbers are too high though. What caused thisproblem in the United States, what is the extend of this problem in our country,and is this distrust of our government even a serious problem at all? These arethree questions that need to be addressed in out society today. What really has caused the American people to distrust our government andwhen did this trend actually begin? I do not believe there is any clear answerto these questions and I do not believe it would ever be possible to pinpointany exact reason for the feelings of the American people. One reason cited bysome is that it is the fault of poor leaders. Two commonly blamed leaders arePresident Johnson and President Nixon. Two of the biggest drops in the publicsconfidence in our government occurred in 1964, during the bombing of Vietnam,and in 1972, during Watergate (Nye). Although these two events may havecontributed to the distrust of the American government, I do not believe thattwo events and two leaders can be held totally responsible. For one thing,these things occurred over twenty years ago, why is there still distrust today. Not only does this distrust still exist, but many would say that it hasincreased greatly since then. I do not thing that two leaders can be pinpointedand blamed for destroying the trust in our government. Perhaps though the blamecould be laid on American political leaders in general. In a 1995 poll, thirty-five percent said the main reason that they do not trust the federal governmentis that politicians lack honesty and integrity. Another twenty-four percentcited the reason for their distrust as politicians not being concerned with theinterests and well-being of the people (Why Dont). It makes sense that ifthe Americans do not trust the people who make up our government, then theywill not trust the government as a whole. Just how wide spread is the problem of distrust in the American government?The Post/ABC News polling organization ran seven different polls between 1985-1987 asking, How much of the time do you trust the government in Washington todo what is right? Those saying only some of the time or never ranged fromfifty-six to sixty-two percent (Dewey). A 1994 poll showed that only fifteenpercent of the American public had confidence in our federal government and onlythirty percent had confidence in their state and local governments. Some peoplemay want to believe that distrust of the United States government is limited toonly a small segment of the population, such as the lower class. These pollsindicate otherwise. It appears that a vast majority of Americans have verylittle trust in our political leaders. It is clear distrust of the governmentis wide spread, but is it a serious problem?Does it matter if the people do not trust their government or is itsomething that should be expected? Many pe ople state that the cynicism anddistrust in America are not a problem at all. One opinion is that a mistrust ofgovernment has been around since our countries beginning and is nothing to worryabout. It is even noted that our country was founded with a mistrust ofgovernment, in particular, mistrust of King George of England (Nye). Anotheropinion is that even though Americans do not trust the every day activities ofthe government, there is still a very positive attitude about the underlyingconstitutional principles that this country was founded upon, and that is themost important thing to consider. Eighty percent of Americans consider theUnited States the best place in the world to live and ninety percent say thatthey like the democratic system of government (Nye). Also, not every aspect ofAmerican government is mistrusted by the American people. They military, forexample, has greatly improved its ratings from the time after Vietnam to theperiod after the Gulf War (Nye). Seventy percen t of Americans say that theyhave a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in our military according to a1995 poll (Why Dont). The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost Essay Robert Frost is the most well known American poet who draws on nature as a subject for his poems. Nearly all of his poetry can be related to the outdoors and a free feeling that Frost seems to cherish. This also was reflected in his life as he lived around nature for the majority of his life. It is not hard to see through his poems how deeply moved he is by the Earth and the miracle of life. He did suffer through an array of hardships during his life, but still kept an appreciation for what he still had. Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco on March 26, 1874. His father, William was a Harvard educated journalist who worked for the Daily Evening Post and was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1880. Isabelle, his mother moved to America at the age of 12 as the daughter of a Scottish sea captain. His mother was his primary source of education and home schooled him for much of his early life. His father passed away in 1884 from tuberculosis and his mothe r moved him and his sister to Lawrence, Massachusetts. This is the first time that Robert is really close to nature and he begins his love for the outdoors here. The basis of our government was realized by Lord Acton, a British historian when he wrote, Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. He knew that if any one person or group ran a country, they would soon become power crazed and lose the respect and support of its citizens. This is the reason why our forefathers came up with a system of checks and balances to ensure that no one group could control the entire government. Lord Acton was not the first to believe in a separated government. Philosophers dating back to Aristotle favored a government that contained the elements of monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy. John Locke later wrote that the best way to eliminate corruption in government was to separate the powers of the legislative and executive branches. Montesquieu added the powers of the judiciary branch to complete what we now call separation of powers. Our forefathers only had to refine the philosophers ideas to come up with our present system of government. Basically they wrote that the executive branch enforces the laws, the legislative branch passes the laws, and the judiciary branch interprets the laws. The president runs the executive branch. The president has many powers including the right to veto a bill. If Congress passes a bill, the president can veto it and unless each house has a two-thirds vote to override the veto, the bill never becomes a law. Over the history of our government, presidents have vetoed over 2,500 acts of Congress and been overridden over 100 times. The president can also call Congress into a special session if they do not act upon proposed legislation by the president. Since the president is head of a political party he can easily influence Congress into legislation. The president can appeal directly to the public in order to influence Congres s. Presidents also have a unique power to pardon people who have been convicted of federal crimes. Another task of our president is to begin the process of appointing all federal judges and other officers of the government, such as his cabinet, ambassadors, ministers, and consuls. Before these positions can be appointed Congress also has to approve each of the officers who were elected by the president. All Supreme Court Judges have been elected by the president then approved by Congress before being appointed. The relationships of the United States and other foreign countries are mostly determined by the president He has the power to decide whether to recognize new nations and governments, and in turn to negotiate treaties with them. He cannot however do this alone. He is dependent on the Senate to approve the treaties with a two-thirds vote. The Senate does not always need to approve the negotiations with foreign nations. The Senate contains two officials elected from each of the fifty states and population determines the number of officials in the House. This means that the more densely populated states have a higher number of representatives. Congress is where amendments and bills are first voted on. The conflict between red and white takes a brutal and shocking form when the Marias Massacre occurs. Under the command of Major Eugene Baker, the U.S. Second Cavalry descends upon an encampment of peaceful Blackfoot people and slaughters almost 200 innocent people. The slaughter occurred on January 23, 1870. The heavily armed soldiers massacred a large number of women, children and old men. The aspect of a mixed-race individual struggling to discover their own identity and the conflict within is brought into stark relief when the young Horace Clarke is said to be one of the armed men responsible for the massacre. The book further explores the fallout of the massacre and what it meant for the Clarke heirs. The third generation of Clarkes also struggles to create and maintain a separate identity in the world. The book is a touching and dramatic tale of an important event which has been largely forgotten. An analysis of the Depreciation Methods in GAAP in the UK Depreciation is the allocation of the cost of a plant asset to expense over its useful (service) life in a rational and systematic mannerâ⬠(Weygandt, Kieso and Kimmel, 2003:416). There are three factors affect the calculation of depreciation, which are asset cost, useful life and salvage value (Weygandt, Kieso and Kimmel, 2003). Accountant in different companies will use various methods to compute the depreciation. There are straight-line method, reducing balance method (double declining balance, sum of digits, reducing percentage), annuity method, and unit of production method (Mike, Ron and Allister, 1994). And in most companies, especially in the large corporations, they will use the straight-line method, because it is the easiest one to compute the depreciation. This essay will illustrate some method that usually used in the companies and contract with each method to find out which one is the most useful. At the beginning, the essay will illustrate the straight-line method , the second one is reducing balance method, the third method is sum of digits, and the last one is the unit of production method. Below each method, the essay will give an example, which is calculated by me. Under the straight-line method, the annual depreciation expense is the same over the assetââ¬â¢s estimated useful life every year. The annual depreciation expense is determined by depreciation cost divided by the useful life of the asset or multiplied by the annual rate of depreciation (Weygandt, Kieso and Kimmel, 2003). Example 1 An asset costs à ¿Ã ¡11,000, its expected salvage value is à ¿Ã ¡1,000, its estimated useful life is 5 years. Depreciable cost =à ¿Ã ¡11,000-à ¿Ã ¡1,000 =à ¿Ã ¡10,000 Annual depreciation expense =à ¿Ã ¡10,000/5years=à ¿Ã ¡2,000 OR Annual rate of depreciation =100%à ·5years=20% Annual depreciation expense =à ¿Ã ¡10,000*20%=à ¿Ã ¡2,000 Year 1 Cost à ¿Ã ¡11,000 Depreciation 2,000 Year 2 Net book value 9,000 Depreciation 2,000 Year 3 Net book value 7,000 Depreciation 2,000 Year 4 Net book value 5,000 Depreciation 2,000 Year 5 Net book value 3,000 Depreciation 2,000 Net book value 1,000 The straight-line method is the simplest way among all the methods; it suitable for the use of asset is unvarying during the useful life; it is popular used by large corporation, such as Campbell Soup, Marriott Corporation and General Mills. However, the reducing balance method has a falling depreciation amount every year during the useful life of the asset. The changing depreciation is depended on the book value (cost less accumulated depreciation). It is calculated to multiply the book value at the beginning of the year and the reducing balance depreciation rate (Weygandt, Kieso and Kimmel, 2003). Example 2 An asset costs (book value at the beginning of year) à ¿Ã ¡11,000, its expected salvage value is à ¿Ã ¡1,000, its estimated useful life is 5 years. Reducing balance depreciation rate = 100%à ·5years=20%* Calculation o f à ¿Ã ¡901.12(à ¿Ã ¡4505.6ÃÆ'-20%) is adjusted to à ¿Ã ¡3505.6 in order to make the book value equal salvage value (Weygandt, Kieso and Kimmel, 2003). Sum of digits is another kind of reducing balance method, which has the closest connection with useful life and salvage value of the asset. The depreciation cost is multiply depreciation cost (asset cost less salvage value) by digits of each year (Mike, Ron and Allister, 1994). The major advantage of the traditional project management methods is that they are plan driven and they follow a sequence and management approach to project development. Thus, the use of the traditional project management methods allows completing a complex project in a sequential phase wise manner where all the requirements are collected and approved at the beginning. And on the basis of these requirements software design is completed next and finally master design is executed to build high quality software. Another advantage of the traditional software development methods is they are very well-organized and purposeful planning and control methods. These methods allow us to recognize the distinct project life cycles (Rehman et al., 2010; Szalvay, 2004; Serena, 2007). Despite a lot of advantages associated with these methods, they have certain drawbacks as well. According to these methods, all the project requirements must be completed and approved before the project is initialized. On the other hand, in case of a large size and complex projects it is not possible to collect all the requirements before beginning the project. Hence, we will need to make some changes to the project requirements which will change design and as a result the entire project development will be affected (Rehman et al., 2010; Szalvay, 2004; Serena, 2007). Still, itââ¬â¢s recognized that considerable development is needed in this area, with current research focusing on description logics. Another prominent challenge of the Semantic Web is in terms of uncertainty. While vagueness issues are relegated to linguistic elements that lack a definite boundary, uncertainty challenges can be understood -- as indicated by Lukasiewicz and Straccia (2007, p. 3) -- as including ââ¬Å"all those approaches in which statements rather than being either true or false, are true or false to some probability or possibility (for example, ââ¬Å"it will rain tomorrowâ⬠)â⬠.
